Innovator: Inventor of SmartArch™ Technology

Inspired by working with Dr. Charles Burstone, Dr. Viecilli applied advanced Finite Element Analysis (FEA) techniques to conceptualize and design SmartArch™, the world’s most sophisticated orthodontic wire, manufactured by Ormco. SmartArch™ uses calibrated forces tailored to each tooth, designed for faster, more comfortable orthodontic results. At Limestone Hills Orthodontics, Dr. Viecilli provides SmartArch™ technology to patients free of charge. A distinct advantage for achieving your best smile.

Expertise in Growth & Early Development

Dr. Viecilli emphasizes the critical importance of early diagnosis. He encourages parents to schedule their child’s orthodontic evaluation by age 7, focusing on jaw development, breathing patterns, and habits that may affect future facial growth. Early interceptive treatment, when necessary, can transform a child’s growth trajectory, often preventing the need for more invasive interventions later.

Comprehensive Care for All Ages

Whether you are looking for traditional metal braces, self-ligating clear ceramic braces, or Invisalign clear aligners for yourself as an adult, or for children, Dr. Viecilli provides a full spectrum of options tailored to your individual lifestyle and goals.

Educator and Global Leader

Dr. Viecilli’s research is not abstract. It directly informs how he treats patients every day. His work on orthodontic force systems, root resorption prevention, and accelerated tooth movement led to the development of SmartArch™, now used by orthodontists worldwide. His publications span English, Portuguese, and Spanish.
0
Peer-Reviewed Publications
Each publication survives scrutiny by independent experts before acceptance. These papers establish the scientific basis for every treatment technique Dr. Viecilli uses in practice. For patients, this means every treatment plan is built on methods that have been tested, challenged, and validated by the scientific community.
0
Academic Citations
A citation means another scientist relied on his work to advance their own research. 1,000+ citations across multiple languages indicate that Dr. Viecilli’s findings are foundational. Actively shaping how orthodontists worldwide understand tooth movement and root safety. Patients benefit from research that other orthodontists read.
0
H-Index
The H-index measures sustained research impact. An H-index of 16 means 16 of his papers have each been cited at least 16 times. For context, a practicing orthodontist with an H-index above 10 is exceptionally rare. Most private-practice orthodontists have an H-index of 0. This number tells patients how seriously the scientific community takes his work.
0
Textbook Chapters
Authored three chapters in The Biomechanical Foundation of Clinical Orthodontics by Charles J. Burstone, the definitive textbook used to train orthodontic residents worldwide. His writing shapes how the next generation of orthodontists is taught. Patients are treated by someone who literally wrote the textbook.

What Does This Mean for You or Your Child?

His 27+ peer-reviewed publications include landmark studies on root resorption, the #1 risk of moving teeth too aggressively. He knows exactly how much force is safe. That is why SmartArch™ reduces treatment time by up to 40% without root damage. He trained under Burstone (biomechanics), Dr. W. Eugene Roberts (bone biology), and received craniofacial genetics and molecular biology training at the PhD level. Which is why dentists and orthodontists refer their most complex cases to him, including craniofacial deformities.

Dr. Viecilli’s Clinical Philosophy

Six principles guide Dr. Viecilli’s clinical decisions. Recommend treatment only when it moves the needle. Anchor every decision in published biomechanics research. Combine specialist credentials with a single-doctor relationship from records to retainer. Price treatment to reflect the science, not what the local market can be persuaded to pay. Offer the specialized treatments Austin patients struggle to find elsewhere. Conduct every consultation directly with the doctor in the office. No phone, text, or email diagnoses.

What Makes This Practice Different

Dr. Viecilli is the only orthodontist in Northwest Austin who combines all of the following: ABO Diplomate (since 2011, recertified 2020), PhD in Orthodontic Biomechanics and Craniofacial Genetics from Indiana University, Adjunct Associate Professor at Loma Linda University, patented inventor of SmartArch™ wire technology, in-office MARPE placement, complimentary i-CAT FLX V7 CBCT scans at every consultation, and direct-doctor care at every visit.

A Clinical Decision Shaped by Training

Most braces wires are essentially a single standard wire asked to work on very different teeth across a single arch. Dr. Viecilli’s doctoral biomechanics training at Indiana University and his co-invention of SmartArch™ with Dr. Charles Burstone reframed that assumption. SmartArch™ delivers calibrated forces tuned per tooth and per stage of treatment, eliminating the need for repeated wire swaps and reducing braces treatment time by up to 40%.

When Treatment Is Not Recommended

Dr. Viecilli does recommend against treatment when treatment is not indicated. A patient with minor, cosmetic-only crowding who is satisfied with their smile does not need braces or aligners. A severe jaw-growth issue that will not resolve with teeth-only movement belongs with an oral surgeon and orthodontist working together, not with orthodontics alone. Limestone Hills tells families when a case is better served by watchful waiting, by a second opinion, or by another specialty entirely.

On Pricing

Limestone Hills prices treatment below the Austin market average. Metal braces start at $4,000 comprehensive, with SmartArch™ wire included at no additional charge for every braces patient. Dr. Viecilli sets prices to reflect the science behind the treatment, not what the local market can be persuaded to pay.

Treatments Offered That Others Don’t

Several Limestone Hills treatments are not commonly available at other Austin orthodontic practices. Dr. Viecilli places MARPE (Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion) in-office without an oral surgeon referral, prescribes vertical pull chin cup therapy for vertical-excess pediatric growth, fits custom MAD snoring appliances for mild to moderate sleep-disordered breathing, runs an exercise-first tongue thrust protocol that resolves most cases without an appliance, and uses SmartArch™ variable-force wire on every braces patient.

The First Consultation, in Detail

Every first consultation at Limestone Hills is conducted one-on-one with Dr. Viecilli, not with a treatment coordinator. The exam is comprehensive: intra-oral, facial, and smile analysis, plus CT analysis of the airway and TMJ. An AI notetaker captures the conversation so the diagnosis and the options discussed are part of the patient’s record. All viable treatment options are reviewed with pros and cons.

The first consultation is completely free, and patients spend up to 30 minutes with the doctor. For complex cases that require a follow-up consultation to finalize the treatment plan, a $150 fee applies. Dr. Viecilli does not make treatment decisions remotely or discuss treatment via text or email.

Board Certification: What It Means for You

Dr. Viecilli has been a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics since 2011, most recently recertified in 2020. Only about one in three practicing orthodontists achieve board certification, an entirely voluntary process that demands years of documented, peer-reviewed clinical work.

Exam format: Traditional. Dr. Viecilli presented 6 patient cases to a panel of examiners, defending every treatment decision in real time. Dr. Viecilli was the only graduate in Indiana University’s orthodontic program history to complete all ABO case requirements within two years. The 6 cases were high-difficulty selections approved as excellent by his ABO peers, and one of them, a complex open bite case treated with TADs, was selected for display at the American Association of Orthodontists annual meeting that year. Since 2011, the quality of treatment at Limestone Hills has only continued to grow.

For you, this means the orthodontist designing your treatment has voluntarily held their work up to the highest standard in the specialty and passed.

The SmartArch™ Story

SmartArch™ is the world’s most advanced orthodontic wire, conceptualized and designed by Dr. Viecilli in collaboration with Prof. Charles Burstone, widely considered the most important biomechanics scientist in orthodontic history. The patent was later purchased by Smarter Alloys and licensed to Ormco, which manufactures it today.

SmartArch™ uses Finite Element Analysis (FEA) modeling, the same engineering method used in aerospace and structural design — to deliver calibrated, continuous forces to each individual tooth. The result: up to 40% faster braces treatment compared to conventional wire systems, without compromising root safety.

Limestone Hills Orthodontics is the only practice in Austin where patients are treated by the inventor of this technology. SmartArch™ is provided to all braces patients at no additional charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dr. Viecilli board certified?

Yes. Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics since 2011, recertified 2020. Only about one in three practicing orthodontists achieve board certification. Dr. Viecilli was the only graduate in Indiana University’s orthodontic program history to complete all ABO case requirements within two years, presenting 6 high-difficulty cases to live examiners (Traditional format). One of those, a complex open bite case treated with TADs, was selected for display at the American Association of Orthodontists annual meeting that year.

What is SmartArch™ and how does it help my treatment?

SmartArch™ is an advanced wire invented by Dr. Viecilli and Prof. Charles Burstone. Patent purchased by Smarter Alloys, licensed to Ormco. Reduces treatment time by up to 40%. Dr. Viecilli received complimentary samples as the inventor in limited quantity. Every braces patient at Limestone Hills Orthodontics gets SmartArch™ at no additional cost.

Does Dr. Viecilli personally see every patient?

Yes. Limestone Hills Orthodontics is a doctor-owned practice. Dr. Viecilli designs your treatment plan, checks progress at every appointment, and orients the team on each step. One doctor, one relationship, start to finish. The same board-certified specialist who starts a child’s Phase I treatment is the same doctor who manages their braces as a teen. For adults, that means never re-explaining a case to a different provider.

What does the free consultation include?

A full 3D CT scan (i-CAT FLX V7) with screenshots, digital photos, comprehensive exam, personalized treatment plan, and detailed cost/financing discussion. Most practices charge $200-$500 for the scan alone. Screenshots are included for patients to take home at no charge. Full 3D viewer on USB is $300 by request.

When should my child first see an orthodontist?

The AAO recommends an evaluation by age 7. Dr. Viecilli can spot developing problems (crossbites, crowding, narrow palates, jaw asymmetries) while bones are still growing. Early intervention can prevent more invasive treatment later. It does not mean braces at 7; most children are monitored until the right time.

What languages does Dr. Viecilli speak?

English (fluent), Portuguese (native), Spanish (conversational). Consultations can be conducted in any of these languages.

How many peer-reviewed publications does Dr. Viecilli have?

27+ peer-reviewed publications with 1,000+ academic citations and an H-index of 16. His research spans orthodontic biomechanics, root resorption prevention, and 3D finite element modeling. Three book chapters in Burstone’s definitive orthodontic textbook plus the Davidovitch tooth movement textbook.
